Return to Sundsvall town

Music & Culture
Culture enjoys a special place in Sundsvall, which has been voted "Cultural Municipality of the Year".

Our civic Cultural Centre, Kulturmagasinet, has been awarded the Europa Nostra Prize, and is celebrated as something of a common room for the people of Sundsvall, a place where they can meet to read, study, discuss art, watch films, paint, eat and relax together.

The Tonhallen Concert Hall is home to the Sundsvall Chamber Orchestra, and the city also has two theatres offering a wide and varied programme of productions.
Teater Västernorrland
Kvartersteatern
Sundsvalls kammarorkester

Famous pop and rock bands from Sundsvall...

The Confusions
Coming from the same neighbourhood in Sundsvall, The Confusions started in the early nineties more for the fun of it than some burning passion to become popstars. But it didn't take to long time until they realised that something was happening.

They had something special, something that lifted the band above the average garagepopbands. In 2002 their song "The Pilot" made it directly to place no 1 on MTVs Up North chart. The first Swedish band to perform in Kaliningrad, Russia!

Garmarna
It all began in 1990 when three youngsters from Sundsvall went to see a performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Struck by the music (performed by a.o. Olov Johansson, nowadays in Väsen) as much as the play, the three decided to start a band the very next day.

Later they stumbled upon the name Garmarna while searching for something fitting for their first gig at Matfors Folkets Hus. Garmarna was presented with a Grammy for the best folk music record of 1996 and nowadays earns world wide support.

Gina Jacobi
Attempts to place Gina Jacobi into one particular musical genre often fail. While it might be easier to compare her with other female musicians, her continuous musical evolution makes this "Norrlander" woman almost indefinable. Her unique music, coming as it does from reflections and relationships with other people. And it sounds like nothing else.

Leif Karate
Intelligent pop from the provocative Sundsvall band formed in 1999. Richard Lloyd from the band Television appears on their debut album.

Stereo Starboy
Stereo Starboy is Elin, Katarina, Linda, Eva, Sara and Mirjam. This Sundsvall girl band, started playing their original power-pop/rock back in 1998. They have toured extensively throughout Sweden.

Tolchock
Tolchock is a Swedish Techno-Trance-Electro-Metal band playing music in the land between Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails. A violent electronic mixture of many influences. The result is physical and exciting machine music.

Jennifer Newberry (Jen)
Honey voiced girl Jen, the girl with a sultry voice and self-assured Swedish-American appeal for Soul, Blues, R&B and Hip-Hop...

Ayleen
New promising Sundsvall artist with catchy beats. Listen to her debut single and more.
